About Sumner
Sumner is a city in Chariton County, Missouri, United States. The 2020 census counted 78 residents. Sumner was named in honor of U.S. Senator Charles Sumner. The area along the Grand River in the northwest corner of present-day Chariton County was first explored by two sons of Daniel Boone and Thomas Stanley prior to Missouri statehood in 1821. The through line in Sumner is the way its history and present-day settings remain visible on the same map. Sumner makes the most sense through those concrete details, with its history still visible in the settings people use today. Other than the trading post not much existed in the area for several years, partly due to marshlands and flooding on the Grand River. Sumner includes the area along the Grand River.
