About Sun Prairie

Sun Prairie's name records a change in the weather. On June 9, 1837, a party traveling from Milwaukee to build Wisconsin's territorial capitol reached the open ground here after days of rain; when the sun appeared, one member marked the spot as Sun Prairie. The settlement later became a village and, in 1958, a city northeast of Madison. Recent Census figures show how quickly its scale has changed: the population rose from 35,967 in 2020 to an estimated 39,227 in 2025. Metro Transit Route A1 supplies a direct present-day link to Madison, running from Sun Prairie's Park and Ride to Capitol Square every 30 minutes on weekdays and Saturdays and hourly on Sundays. A 23-month public-library expansion completed in May 2026 added roughly 28,000 square feet. The finished building includes five study rooms, a makerspace, expanded youth and teen areas, a media production center, a Library of Things, a drive-up window and lockers, and an outdoor amphitheater.

That Kind Stage began hosting free, all-ages music and theater in its first summer, adding a new venue to a city calendar that already included concerts at Wetmore Park, food-truck Mondays, and seasonal downtown events. Sun Prairie's largest recurring gathering remains the Sweet Corn Festival at Angell Park. The 73rd edition was scheduled for August 19-23, 2026, with a parade and downtown block party, music, a carnival, and the roasting of about 80 tons of Wisconsin-grown corn. The combination of a Madison bus connection, newly enlarged library, neighborhood park programming, and a five-day local festival describes community activity more concretely than the city's growth numbers alone.
