Sunray, TX

Sunray is a city in northeastern Moore County, where the Texas Panhandle's semiarid landscape meets an oil-and-gas working corridor. The 2020 census counted 1,707 residents. Jack Clarence Collins founded the town, and its early growth followed production in the Jones field, new pipelines, carbon-black plants, and the Shamrock Oil & Gas refinery. The Valero McKee Refinery still operates several miles southwest of Sunray, putting a major industrial site into the city's geographic orbit. Farm to Market Road 119 connects the refinery area with the surrounding Moore County road network.

Sunray Collegiate ISD is home of the Bobcats, giving the city a school system and a high-school identity that reaches beyond its small population. The refinery and school district describe two different sides of the place: one tied to the Panhandle's petroleum infrastructure, the other to local students and town routines. Sunray's setting is easy to picture from those connections, with a compact city east of the refinery, broad semiarid country around it, and the Jones field and highway corridors behind the town's early growth.
