Sunrise, FL

Sunrise has one of the most memorable origin stories in South Florida. Back in 1961, developer Norman Johnson tried to lure homebuyers to his remote subdivision by building a fully furnished "Upside-Down House." Complete with inverted furniture, upside-down landscaping, and a convertible hanging from the carport ceiling, the novelty drew over a million curious visitors before it was finally demolished in the 1970s. The promotion worked remarkably well. Over the decades, Sunrise expanded from a tiny development into a bustling suburban city of nearly 100,000 residents, stretching all the way to the edge of the Florida Everglades.

Today, the city offers a comfortable mix of quiet residential pockets and major regional attractions. The western side revolves around the Sawgrass district, best known for Sawgrass Mills. As one of the largest shopping and entertainment destinations in the country, it brings hundreds of designer outlets, great restaurants, and steady weekend energy to the area. Western Sunrise also hosts sprawling corporate parks that serve as major employment hubs for South Florida. Further east, the scenery shifts toward established, tree-lined neighborhoods featuring single-family homes, modest rental communities, and peaceful waterfront views along local lakes and canals.

The city also gets a massive boost of energy from Amerant Bank Arena, located right along the Sawgrass Expressway. As the home of the NHL's Florida Panthers, Sunrise became the center of the hockey world following the team's back-to-back Stanley Cup championships in 2024 and 2025. Aside from thrilling game nights, the venue draws huge crowds from across the region for major concert tours, comedy shows, and family events. Having an arena of that scale right in town gives residents easy access to top-tier entertainment without having to commute into Miami or Fort Lauderdale.

Community life centers around the Sunrise Civic Center and local green spaces on the eastern side of town. The Civic Center campus acts as a cultural and fitness anchor, bringing together an intimate theater, an art gallery, an athletic club, and an aquatics complex with an Olympic-size pool. Nearby, gathering spots like City Park host regular outdoor festivities, including the popular Caribbean American Heritage Festival with live steelpan music, island food vendors, and dance performances. These community hubs give Sunrise a friendly, close-knit hometown feel alongside its big-city conveniences.
