Sussex is a census-designated place and the county seat of Sussex County, Virginia. The current ACS25 place file records 12,169,277 square meters of land at a Census centroid of 36.9174°N, 77.2719°W. Its courthouse district preserves the county-seat setting: the surviving courthouse was completed in 1828 by builder Dabney Cosby Sr., alongside an 1817 clerk's office and early homes. The Sussex County Court House Historic District entered the National Register in 1973.
