Sutersville, PA

Sutersville sits along the Youghiogheny River in Westmoreland County, with the water doing a lot of the town’s visual work. Eli C. Suter laid out the community around 1870, and the name recalls Suter’s Ferry, the crossing that helped tie the riverbanks together before the present road network. The borough was settled in 1867 and incorporated in 1902. A bridge built in 1896 made the crossing more dependable, and the town grew within the river corridor, across from Elizabeth Township.

That river setting also puts Sutersville in the old industrial story of the Monongahela and Youghiogheny valleys. Coal and coke shaped work and freight here, with the Baltimore & Ohio and the Pittsburgh, McKeesport & Youghiogheny railroads serving the borough. Today, the best way to get the local picture is to notice how compact everything is: hillside streets, the broad river, and the bridge carrying traffic through a place built around a crossing. It is the kind of town where a ferry name can still tell you why the settlement took root.
