Sutton, NE

Sutton began as a Burlington and Missouri River Railroad point in 1871, then grew into one of Clay County's early towns. The railroad gave it a straight shot into the new Nebraska settlement map, and the name came from Sutton, Massachusetts. For a time Sutton was even the county seat; Clay County moved that role to Clay Center in 1879 after a string of contested elections. Today the city sits in the Hastings micropolitan area, with the old rail-town layout still doing much of the orientation. Sutton is southeastern Nebraska in a familiar pattern: railroad first, county politics second, and a small grid of streets that outlasted both.
