About Suwanee

Suwanee's settlement history begins near the meeting of Suwanee Creek and the Chattahoochee River, where Shawnee and later Cherokee and Creek communities lived before nineteenth-century land cessions. A post office established a town identity in 1838, and the Georgia Air Line Railroad arrived in 1871. The present Old Town preserves that rail-oriented chapter in an approximately 56-acre district of houses and commercial buildings arranged along Main Street and the Norfolk Southern corridor. Suwanee remained a small agricultural community well into the twentieth century and incorporated in 1949. Much of current community activity centers on a newer civic district built from a former industrial site. Town Center now combines City Hall, businesses, housing, open lawn, an amphitheater, the Big Splash fountain, and public art. In 2024, Town Center on Main and DeLay Nature Park added about 25 acres, including a 1,200-foot pedestrian bridge, wooded paths, a reading grotto near the library, volleyball courts, a reflection pond, and gathering lawns.

The parks connect with the Suwanee Creek Greenway, a four-mile hard-surface route through woods and wetlands that links nearly 400 acres of parkland with residential and commercial areas. Suwanee Creek Park supplies the greenway's trailhead as well as an 18-hole disc golf course and additional hard- and soft-surface trails. At White Street Park, Harvest Farm includes 128 rented garden plots, a public orchard, a butterfly garden, and a rainwater cistern. The city's 2026 calendar places concerts, outdoor theater, races, and a farmers market in the Town Center area; the market runs weekly from May through October and on selected winter Saturdays.
