Swampscott, MA

Working fishing lockers still occupy the first floor of Swampscott's 1896 Fish House beside Fisherman's Beach. The municipally owned building consolidated the small shanties that once lined this North Shore waterfront; fishers and lobster catchers continue to use it, while the harbormaster, yacht club, and town sailing program share the building. That living maritime thread reaches back to the Swampscott dory, developed here in 1840 as a flat-bottomed boat that could launch from the beach, and to the local invention of the lobster trap. Resort hotels and summer houses followed in the nineteenth century, and Swampscott separated from Lynn as its own town in 1852. The shoreline is an everyday public asset with practical rules attached. Swampscott lists six swimming beaches; Eisman's and Phillips have daily seasonal lifeguards, Fisherman's is guarded on summer weekends and includes a pier and launch ramp, and King's Beach is public without a lifeguard.

Several beach-adjacent streets and lots require town recreation parking stickers, while Humphrey Street parking at Fisherman's and King's does not. Away from the water, two ADA-accessible stone-dust segments of the Swampscott Rail Trail connect directly to trails in Marblehead and Salem. The planned full two-mile path would reach schools, parks, the recreation center, and a point three blocks from the MBTA commuter-rail station, although the town still lists later design and construction milestones as undetermined. In summer 2026, recurring town gatherings included Sunday farmers markets on the Town Hall lawn and the By the Sea concert series, with Harbor and Marine Fest held at Fisherman's Beach.
