Sweet Home, AR

Sweet Home sits on the southern edge of the Little Rock metro, a rural Pulaski County community with a majority-Black history rooted in farms, churches, and family land. The Hanger Cotton Gin, dating to at least the 1870s, is the standout old landmark: it ties today’s roads and scattered homes to the cotton economy that shaped this part of Arkansas. Sweet Home also carries the memory of the old Arkansas Confederate Soldiers’ Home, which operated here from 1890 to 1955, and of the community institutions built by Black residents around Allen Chapel AME, Sweet Home Methodist Episcopal Church, and later neighborhood organizing.

Mining changed the ground in the mid-twentieth century. Bauxite strip mines left water-filled blue holes across the area, physical reminders of an industry that cut into the farm landscape. Local school life now centers on College Station Elementary, Fuller Middle, and Wilbur D. Mills University Studies High School, with Mills located in Sweet Home. The community’s texture is easy to miss if you are passing through toward Little Rock, but the old gin, church roads, cemetery grounds, school district, and homes scattered across former fields tell a fuller story of a place that has held onto its own name and institutions.
