About Sycamore

Sycamore is a DeKalb County city near the Kishwaukee River, with European-American settlement beginning in the 1830s north of the river. Its courthouse square and older commercial buildings give it a classic northern Illinois county-seat feel, even as nearby DeKalb and Northern Illinois University shape the broader area. Sycamore is especially known for the annual Sycamore Pumpkin Festival, started in 1962 by local resident Wally Thurow. That festival gives the city a cheerful civic marker without overwhelming its everyday small-city identity.
