About Sylacauga

Sylacauga is a Talladega County city best known for its fine white marble bedrock, a local industry with roots going back to the first recorded marble discovery in 1820. The area also has deep Native history, appearing in accounts from Hernando de Soto's 1540 expedition near the Coosa chiefdoms. Sylacauga has another strange claim to fame: in 1954, the Hodges meteorite struck a local woman, one of the rare documented cases of a person being hit by a meteorite.
