Sylvan Springs, AL

At the 2020 census, Sylvan Springs was a Jefferson County town of 1,653 people northwest of Pleasant Grove. Families settled here in the 1880s around the Old Oak Grove Methodist Church. The place was first known as Hoagtown, after William T. Hogan, a stepson of early community settler Dudley Goolsby; residents later chose Sylvan Springs for a nearby spring that supplied fresh water. The town incorporated on May 22, 1957. Its position at the western edge of Jefferson County's dense patchwork of municipalities puts Alabama Highway 269 and Birmingport Highway in the middle of the story, linking a residential town to Birmingham and the communities around it.

The old schoolhouse now serves as Sylvan Springs' community center, a nice piece of reuse in a town whose public places do a lot of work. The town park has a nature trail, walking track, picnic pavilions, and a play area, while ball fields and a central fire station handle the more organized side of local life. On April 8, 1998, a violent tornado crossed Sylvan Springs; the National Weather Service recorded four deaths there, and the First United Methodist Church was among the structures damaged. The park, schoolhouse, fire station, and spring-fed name give Sylvan Springs a distinct shape even within Birmingham's larger western orbit.
