Syracuse, NE

Syracuse is an Otoe County city of 1,941 residents in the 2020 census, laid out in the late 1850s as settlers and the railroad moved through southeast Nebraska. Midland Pacific placed a station in 1871, connecting Syracuse with Lincoln and giving the town a lasting transportation role. A school was established early, and an 1875 school building near today's South Park tied education to the original town grid. Today the city organizes everyday life through its parks and recreation department, South Park, Williams Park, the ball complex, aqua center, and local schools.

Agriculture remains a major part of the regional economy, with Syracuse sitting in Otoe County's farm country. The city's calendars are split between school athletics, municipal recreation, and the agricultural seasons beyond the city limits.
