About Taft Southwest
Taft Southwest is a census-designated community in San Patricio County, on the South Texas coastal plain near the Corpus Christi area. Its story is closely tied to Taft, whose planned community grew out of the Taft Ranch and took shape after a 1921 auction drew thousands of people. Taft Southwest developed as a segregated Mexican-American neighborhood in the early twentieth century, and that history matters: the community’s streets carry the memory of families who built lives, businesses, churches, and schools in a part of the county that was often described from the outside.
Today the area is part of the Taft school world, with Taft Independent School District serving local students. County roads lead through a landscape of fields, ranch country, and coastal-weather skies, while nearby towns and the Corpus Christi region supply larger shopping, work, and cultural trips. Del Mar College serves as the designated community college for San Patricio County. Taft Southwest feels rooted in the overlap between neighborhood and county: close enough to Taft for school and everyday errands, but carrying a distinct Mexican-American history that gives the community its own voice within the South Texas plain.
