Talbotton, GA

Talbotton serves as the peaceful county seat of Talbot County, home to roughly 700 residents. Established in the late 1820s, the town grew into a regional educational center during the late nineteenth century, and that historic character still shows in its classic street layout and preserved architecture. Sitting along U.S. Route 80, it offers a quiet, rural lifestyle while keeping residents within an easy 40-minute drive of Columbus for shopping, dining, and healthcare.

Despite its small size, Talbotton holds a surprising place in American business history. In the 1850s, Lazarus Straus settled here and opened a general store before his family moved to New York and helped build Macy's department store. Today, a historical marker near the center of town marks the original family home site. Along with the local schools and county courthouse, these roots give the community a strong sense of heritage in a relaxed, close-knit setting.
