Talking Rock, GA

Talking Rock is a Pickens County town that began with the railroad in 1883, at the foothills between Ellijay and Jasper. The town takes its name from nearby Talking Rock Creek, although the exact origin of the name remains disputed. Georgia State Route 136 runs through town; State Routes 5 and 515 pass west and connect the area with Ellijay and Jasper, the Pickens County seat. The 2020 census counted 91 residents.

The old railroad story still sets the scale of the place. Talking Rock's town hall, schoolhouse, community room, and park sit along the highway, and the park has a pavilion, playground, picnic tables, grills, and restrooms by the creek. Heritage Days recur in October, with the 2026 event scheduled for October 17-18. Pickens County schools serve local students. The creek, park, and old public buildings keep the town's community life close to the highway. Talking Rock is a mountain town with a railroad beginning, creek-named geography, and a civic center that doubles as a place for town meetings and seasonal gatherings.
