Talmo, GA

Talmo is a Jackson County town with 257 residents in the 2020 census, stretched along U.S. 129 between Gainesville and Jefferson. Main Street runs through the town parallel to the highway, and Mountain Creek Church Road serves the southeast side. Tributaries of the Middle Oconee River drain the surrounding country. Pendergrass borders Talmo to the southeast, giving the town a close relationship to a cluster of small communities along the U.S. 129 corridor.

The name Talmo comes from the Creek language and refers to the home of Chief Tallassee. The Georgia General Assembly incorporated the town in 1920. Talmo’s civic life is handled through a full-time city clerk and active city council, with Talmo Baptist Church among the visible institutions in town. The road network does much of the orientation: U.S. 129 points northwest to Gainesville and southeast to Jefferson, the county seat, while Main Street supplies the local cross street. Talmo is a small northeast Georgia town whose identity is tied to a Creek-derived name, a state highway, and the Middle Oconee watershed.
