About Tampico
Tampico is a Yakima County community on Ahtanum Creek about 18 miles west of Yakima, a place whose name came from Mexico but whose deeper story is tied to the valley. Pioneer cattleman A. D. Elgin named it for Tampico, while Chief Kamiakin was born near Ahtanum Creek and St. Joseph's Mission was built nearby in 1852. Hops once mattered in the local farm economy, and West Valley schools serve the community today. Tampico is central Washington in a creek-and-name story.
