About Taopi

Taopi is a city in Mower County, Minnesota, United States. The 2024 census counted 68 residents. The name of the village is derived from Taopi, the native chief who befriended the settlers after the New Ulm massacre. Taopi was platted in 1875 by the Taopi Farming Company in the name of John W. The short version is that Taopi carries an earlier story into the places people know and use now. That is the local read on Taopi: its past remains attached to the places people use now. Taopi is in southern Mower County and is surrounded by Lodi Township. Minnesota State Highway 56 passes through the city, leading west 4 miles to Adams and southeast 8 miles to Le Roy. Taopi includes the North Branch of the Upper Iowa River.
