Tecumseh, IN

Tecumseh is a small unincorporated census-designated place in eastern Fayette Township, Vigo County, on the Wabash River. The 2020 census counted 778 residents. It falls within the Vigo County School Corporation, with Fayette Elementary and the West Vigo middle and high schools serving the local school route. Terre Haute is the nearby place for fuller shopping, medical care, and jobs, while the community itself is a spread-out mix of homes, farms, river bottom, and county roads rather than an incorporated town center.

The settlement was once known as Durkee’s Ferry, then took the name Tecumseh in honor of the Shawnee leader associated with the early Indiana frontier. A post office arrived in 1890, when the place was still only a handful of houses. That small scale remains the useful clue: Tecumseh is part of Vigo County’s rural edge, close to Terre Haute but oriented toward the Wabash and the agricultural land around it. Its identity is carried by the school district, the river, and the road network more than by a formal downtown.
