Tekoa, WA

Tekoa sits in Whitman County’s rolling Palouse fields at the confluence of Little Hangman Creek and Latah Creek, with State Route 27 tying the city to the surrounding farm country. The Coeur d’Alene people lived in this region before the townsite was platted in 1888. Tekoa’s railroad past survives in the Milwaukee Road trestle, now part of the Palouse to Cascades State Park Trail. The 2020 census counted 817 residents, and the town’s low skyline still makes the old rail and grain-country setting easy to read.

The Empire Theatre gives downtown a different kind of continuity. Built as a 1940 Art Deco movie house, it closed in 1958, reopened after restoration in 2000, and now hosts plays, concerts, dance, local art, and touring performers. City offices, parks, council meetings, and local events fill out the year, including Slippery Gulch Days. The trail and theatre pull people through the same small city from two directions: one follows the old rail grade across the Palouse, and the other gathers under the theatre marquee.
