Tenaha, TX

Tenaha is a Shelby County town in East Texas, with 989 residents in the 2020 census. The community was established on February 2, 1886, and its name came from Tenehaw Municipality, an early name for Shelby County. The arrival of the Houston, East and West Texas Railway helped the town grow into a local shipping and business point, with the courthouse square and downtown streets giving the place a recognizable center. U.S. highways now carry the through traffic that once belonged to the rail line.

Tenaha ISD keeps education at the heart of town, with the Tigers’ maroon-and-white tradition and a high-school campus connected to generations of local families. The Timpson & Tenaha News archive captures everyday pieces of that life: school graduations, church gatherings, downtown events, and names familiar across the community. A 1935 quilt filled with local family names is one of the town’s more personal historical objects.
