Terminous, CA

Terminous is a census-designated place on the Terminous Tract, an island in San Joaquin County’s Sacramento–San Joaquin Delta, with 429 residents in the 2020 census. Its name came from being the end of the road into the Delta, a fitting label for a place where levees, sloughs, farm fields, and river landings shape everyday movement. The community sits below sea level near the San Joaquin River and State Route 12.

Terminous grew around agriculture and transportation. During the asparagus boom, a Western Pacific spur reached the community in 1927, and riverboats brought freight to the landing for loading onto rail cars. At the height of the season, roughly 350 laborers worked nearby, with many living in a box-car community made from de-wheeled cars set on railroad ties. The rail branch disappeared in the 1960s as trucks took over, but the Delta’s water-and-farm map remains. Terminous is a small California community where a road’s end became a produce station, a labor camp, and a river-edge address.
