Thayer, IL

Thayer is a quiet village of around 500 residents in southern Sangamon County, sitting along Route 4 just a few miles south of Auburn and about twenty-five miles from Springfield. The community took shape in 1900 when the Chicago, Wilmington and Vermilion Coal Company bought local farmland to build a planned mining settlement. Streets were quickly laid out, a company store and hotel went up, and dozens of homes were built for the arriving miners. While the local mine closed after just fourteen years, those original company-built houses and straightforward street grid still anchor the village today.

In the decades since the coal era, Thayer evolved into a peaceful rural bedroom community, even serving as an early alignment of Route 66 during the late 1920s. Today, life here is unhurried and residential. Families and retirees appreciate the open space, low traffic, and affordable homes, with the historic village hall and vintage miner cottages lending a bit of local character. With Auburn right down the road for schools and groceries, and Springfield an easy drive north for work and entertainment, Thayer offers simple small-town living with city conveniences close at hand.
