The University of Virginia's College at Wise, VA

Tucked into the mountains of southwestern Virginia, the University of Virginia's College at Wise gives this small town a distinctive college-town feel. Founded in 1954 as Clinch Valley College after local residents rallied to bring higher education to the far western corner of the state, it remains the only branch campus of the University of Virginia. The scenic 400-acre campus started with just over a hundred students, many of them returning Korean War veterans, and has grown into a key anchor for the surrounding community.

Today, UVA Wise draws students with degrees in high-demand fields like software engineering, nursing, business, and education. It brings plenty of youthful energy to the area, featuring NCAA Division II athletics, more than 50 student organizations, and a full calendar of campus activities throughout the academic year. Perched along the Appalachian Plateau at nearly 2,700 feet, Wise serves as both the county seat and a quiet mountain home with deep roots in the region's coal heritage.
