Thermal, CA

Thermal lies in eastern Riverside County's Coachella Valley, about nine miles north of the Salton Sea and 138 feet below mean sea level. The place began as a Southern Pacific railroad camp in 1910, and canal irrigation turned the surrounding desert into an agricultural landscape. Highway 86 and Airport Boulevard provide the main orientation, with the railroad-era settlement spread across fields, palms, and low desert roads. The former Camp Young naval air station became Thermal Airport in 1965, adding an aviation layer to the community's agricultural and rail history.

Current activity reaches well beyond the old rail camp. The Desert International Horse Park sits west of Thermal and hosts equestrian competitions on Airport Boulevard, while BMW's Performance Driving Center West operates in the same desert setting. Coachella Valley Unified School District campuses serve Thermal and nearby communities, giving the area a school network alongside its farm roads and event grounds. Thermal's local map is a low-lying valley settlement where irrigation, an airport, horse competitions, and high-performance driving share the space between the Salton Sea and the Coachella Valley.
