About Thorntown

Thorntown is a Boone County town on Sugar Creek, where George Harness opened a trading post in 1827 and Cornelius Westfall surveyed and platted the town in 1831. The name translates an earlier Native American village name, and the local story also reaches back to Miami and Eel River communities that lived and traded along the creek. The Thorntown Heritage Museum preserves pieces of the later town, including a 1909 fountain, an 1898 curfew bell, and a 1914 school cornerstone. Thorntown is a central Indiana place with a long creek-side timeline.
