Thorsby, AL

Thorsby is a city in Chilton County built around a Scandinavian settlement in central Alabama. Swedish, Norwegian, Finnish, and Danish families came south in the late nineteenth century, drawn by a warmer climate and land suited to farming. Theodore T. Thorson was one of the town's leading founders, and his late-1890s home remains part of the local story. The old homes and church architecture still show how strongly the first generation shaped the town.

Today, the old Norwegian Lutheran Church houses the Helen Jenkins Chapel museum, and the Scandinavian Cemetery gives the community a place to keep those early family names visible. Thorsby Swedish Fest fills Richard H. Wood Memorial Park each October with music, cars, crafts, food, and a beauty pageant. Thorsby High School grew from the earlier Thorsby Institute and remains a local school center. The town's character comes through in the mix of Alabama farmland, a preserved Scandinavian thread, and a festival that keeps that history in the open.
