Thousand Island Park, NY

Thousand Island Park occupies the southwest end of Wellesley Island in the St. Lawrence River, in the Thousand Islands region of Jefferson County. Rev. J. F. Dayan founded it in 1875 as a Methodist summer community with a Chautauqua-like program, and the original camp grew into a village of cottages, roads, docks, and gathering places. It remains seasonal, so the park’s rhythm still follows the summer calendar more than a conventional year-round town.

The Thousand Island Park Historic District was listed on the National Register in 1982 for its concentration of late nineteenth- and early twentieth-century resort architecture. The Tabernacle remains the old social center, while Vivekananda Cottage adds a remarkable spiritual chapter: Swami Vivekananda spent seven weeks here in 1895, and his followers later preserved the cottage as a Hindu sacred site. La Fargeville Central School District serves the community, but the park’s deeper institution is the summer village itself—wooden cottages, the river, and traditions passed down by returning families.
