Thurmond, WV

Tucked deep in the New River Gorge, Thurmond is one of the most unusual spots in Fayette County. With only about five permanent residents, it functions mostly as a preserved historic ghost town. A century ago, it was a booming railroad hub where coal trains ran around the clock and tens of thousands of passengers passed through the busy depot each year. Today, the original commercial buildings and rail lines remain intact along the riverbank, framed by steep canyon walls.

Most visitors come to Thurmond to explore New River Gorge National Park and Preserve. The restored 1904 train depot operates as a seasonal park visitor center, and Amtrak still picks up and drops off passengers right along the main tracks. Getting into town requires crossing a unique single-lane bridge shared directly with the railway. For anyone settling in the area, it makes a great weekend outing for exploring Appalachian history, watching trains, or hitting the nearby river trails.
