Tieton, WA

Tieton is a Yakima County code city at the upper edge of the Yakima Valley, about 12 miles west of Yakima along Summitview Road. The 2020 census counted 1,389 residents. The name comes from the Tieton River, a name associated with roaring water, and the town began in 1888 as a scattered community of farmers and orchardists. Irrigation arrived in 1911, the railroad followed through Cowiche Canyon in 1916, and by the early 1920s fruit shipments were moving out by the carload. Orchards still make Tieton look like a patchwork of green rows against dry hills, with the Naches River and city of Naches about five miles north.

Tieton Elementary and Highland School District keep education close to town, while Tieton Arts & Humanities brings art projects into the schools and the wider valley. Yakima is the practical larger neighbor, but the old farm roads and irrigation ditches give Tieton its own rhythm.
