Tigerton, WI

Tigerton is a Shawano County village on the South Branch of the Embarrass River, where the 2020 census counted 708 residents. The Lake Shore Railroad reached the area in 1879-80, and the first post office opened in 1880 alongside the tracks. The village incorporated in 1896 and took its name from Tiger Creek, a local stream. The river remains a visible line through the village and its park.

Railroad and lumber shaped Tigerton's first century. Logs moved through the Embarrass valley toward sawmills, and the line kept serving the village until 1981. The school grew alongside the settlement: the first school stood on the present Gazebo Park lot, while the current district includes elementary, middle, and high schools. Tigerton School District also has the Tigerton School Forest and Environmental Center, where students learn outdoors in the same wooded landscape that fed earlier mill work.
