Tinton Falls, NJ

The waterfall in Tinton Falls was an industrial power source centuries before it became a borough landmark. Soon after the Monmouth Patent of 1665, settlers combined local bog iron, charcoal from surrounding forests, and water power to establish an ironworks. Lewis Morris expanded the operation after acquiring an interest in 1675. It became one of the few 17th-century North American ironworks to reach production, but that history also depended on forced labor: borough records note 60 or more enslaved people at Tinton Manor in 1680. The falls later powered grist and saw mills, and a grist mill stored Continental Army powder and supplies during the Revolutionary War. Today, trails and a viewing platform at Overlook by the Falls make the namesake landscape publicly accessible. The 2020 census recorded 19,181 residents, while the July 2025 estimate was 19,539. During 2020-2024, owner occupancy was 84 percent, the median owner-occupied value was $478,000, monthly costs for owners with a mortgage were $2,535, median gross rent was $1,746, and one-quarter of residents were age 65 or older.

Sycamore Recreation Complex has six fields, a playground, gazebo, and walking trail; Liberty Park II combines fields and courts with a trail, dog park, and playground. Wardell Park's tennis, pickleball, and basketball courts currently operate from 8:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m., with an acoustical barrier addressing court noise. Municipal programs in 2026 included youth soccer, children's art, and summer camp. Shark River Park extends into Tinton Falls as well as Wall and Neptune townships. The 996-acre county park has ponds, picnic areas, fishing, playgrounds, and 7.5 miles of trails through wetland, floodplain, and pine-oak habitats. The community-managed Tinton Falls Public Library adds weekday evening hours, a Saturday schedule, and monthly programs, while its collaboration with the recreation department places a StoryWalk around fields at Sycamore Park.
