Tipton sits in the rolling farm country of Mitchell County, founded in the early 1870s by homesteaders arriving in covered wagons. The community was originally named Pittsburg, but after learning that Kansas already had a town with that name, settlers chose Tipton instead, honoring Tipton, Iowa.
