Tipton, PA

Tipton is a small census-designated place in Antis Township, Blair County, spread along the old Pennsylvania Railroad Main Line between Tyrone and Altoona. The rail line is the clearest piece of local history, but Tipton's internal map is more personal: four named sections—the Poe, Pellegrine, Noel, and Tilly areas—take their names from early settlers. That gives the community a string-of-neighborhoods feel, with the railroad valley and the roads through central Pennsylvania holding the pieces together.

Bellwood-Antis School District serves the area, tying Tipton into the schools and services of nearby Bellwood. Antis Township's history follows the expansion of Pennsylvania Railroad lines in the late nineteenth century, and the old rail corridor has become part of the region's trail and outdoor network. Altoona is the larger service center to the east, Tyrone sits to the northwest, and Tipton occupies the in-between stretch. Tipton is a railroad community organized by four local names, a school district, and the steep green valley around Blair County's main travel routes.
