Togiak, AK

Togiak is a coastal village located on the shores of Togiak Bay in southwest Alaska, roughly 67 miles west of Dillingham. Because it is completely off the road system, getting in and out requires a small bush plane or a boat during the ice-free summer months. Getting around town is straightforward, with residents mostly using ATVs in the warmer weather and snowmachines in the winter. Tundra, rivers, and the Ahklun Mountains surround the town, giving it a quiet, open feel shaped by the weather and tides.

With around 800 residents, Togiak is a primarily Yup'ik community where subsistence fishing, hunting, and berry gathering are central to daily life. Summers are especially active as families harvest salmon and prepare food stores for the winter ahead. The town has the essential services needed for village life, including a K-12 school, a tribal health clinic, and local grocery stores. Bordered by the vast Togiak National Wildlife Refuge, it offers a close-knit, self-reliant lifestyle for anyone settling into rural Alaska.
