Toksook Bay, AK

Toksook Bay is a tight-knit Yup'ik village of around 650 residents perched on Nelson Island along the Bering Sea. Like most of rural Alaska, you won't find any roads leading in from the outside world. Getting here means flying in on a small regional plane that lands on the local gravel strip, while groceries and heavy freight arrive by barge during the short summer window. Around town, locals get around by four-wheeler, skiff, or snowmobile depending on the season.

Daily life centers around family, the seasons, and Nelson Island Area School, which serves local kids and often doubles as a community gathering spot. Subsistence traditions remain a huge part of the local lifestyle, with residents regularly hunting, berry picking on the tundra, and fishing the coastal waters for halibut and salmon.
