Toledo, IL

Toledo is Cumberland County's seat, a small Illinois city of 1,161 residents in the 2020 census. The county was formed in 1843, and Toledo has held the seat since 1855. It was first known as Prairie City before taking the Toledo name in 1874. The courthouse at 140 Courthouse Square gives the center its civic purpose, while Illinois Route 121 runs through town and connects the county seat with Greenup five miles to the southeast. Farm roads approach from every side.

Cumberland Community Unit School District 77 keeps its elementary, middle, and high schools in Toledo, making the city a daily destination for families across the county. Charleston and Mattoon sit at the edges of the surrounding micropolitan area, but Toledo's own rhythm is set by court days, school traffic, county offices, and the businesses around the square. The compact center has the feel of a place built to serve its county. Toledo is small in population, but its courthouse, school campuses, and highway give it a larger role on the Cumberland County map.
