Toluca, IL

Toluca is a Marshall County city in central Illinois, about 40 miles northeast of Peoria. The 2020 census counted 1,340 residents. Illinois Route 117 runs through town as Main Street and Santa Fe Avenue, while the North Branch of Crow Creek crosses the south side before joining the Illinois River system. Toluca sits in the Peoria metropolitan area, but the local map is still made of grain fields, rail lines, and small towns connected by two-lane highways.

William Twist and local farmers established Toluca in 1887 as a regular stop on the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway. A grain elevator, stockyard, stores, blacksmith shop, and post office followed, giving farmers a place to ship grain and livestock. Coal mining began nearby in 1892, bringing Irish, Polish, Serbian, Lithuanian, and Italian workers into the town’s growing blocks. The mines and railroad are quieter now, but Toluca’s Santa Fe street names, elevator history, and Crow Creek geography still show how the city was built.
