Tom Bean, TX

Tom Bean is a Grayson County city about ten miles southeast of Sherman, set along State Highway 11 and Farm roads 902 and 2729. The city was built for a railroad. Thomas Bean, a surveyor and landowner from Bonham, donated fifty acres for a townsite and right-of-way, and the St. Louis Southwestern Railway arrived in 1888. Settlers and businesses moved over from nearby White Mound, which lost its post office to the new place.

By the early 1890s, Tom Bean had a post office, school, general store, blacksmith shop, cotton gin, and weekly newspaper. The school moved into a two-story building with an auditorium in 1891, and the city charter followed in 1897. Cotton and rail traffic eventually gave way to automobiles and bigger nearby cities, but the original logic remains easy to read: a town placed on donated land so the tracks would come through.
