Toms Brook, VA

Toms Brook is a Shenandoah County town of 276 people in the 2020 census, set along US 11 in the northern Shenandoah Valley. The road serves as a local parallel to Interstate 81, while the town's name comes from the stream that runs through the valley. Its place in Civil War history comes from the Battle of Tom's Brook on October 9, 1864, a Union cavalry victory fought near the town during the Shenandoah Valley campaign. The nearby battlefield and road corridor put Toms Brook inside a much larger valley story.

The town's most distinctive building is the former Toms Brook School, built in 1935–36 during a countywide effort to replace older schoolhouses. Its Colonial Revival design placed an auditorium at the center, with classrooms along the side; after being listed on the National Register in 2011, it was rehabilitated into fourteen apartments. Peter's Lutheran Church, built in 1904, adds another historic marker. Toms Brook is a small town where a stream, a Civil War battlefield, a school, and US 11 give the local map its shape.
