Tonica, IL

Tonica is a LaSalle County village that grew from a small hamlet called Point Republic into an Illinois Central Railroad stop. Andrew West, the railroad’s local agent, helped establish the village, and the tracks arrived on May 23, 1853. The 2020 census counted 749 residents. Illinois Route 251 passes through the center, with Peru about nine miles north and Wenona about 12 miles south; Interstate 39 runs along the west side with access at Exit 48.

Tonica Grade School serves as one of the village’s everyday institutions, while the roads and old rail line keep the community tied to western LaSalle County. The railroad once gave Tonica a reputation for shipping more pork than a village of its size, a detail that captures how transportation and farm production worked together here.
