About Tonopah

Tonopah is Nye County’s seat, born from Jim Butler’s silver discovery at Tonopah Springs in May 1900. The post office first opened as Butler in 1901, then changed to Tonopah in 1905, the same year the town replaced Belmont as county seat. Silver turned the camp into the ‘Queen of the Silver Camps,’ with railroads, mills, saloons, and assay offices arriving behind the ore. Tonopah is a Nevada desert town whose whole personality was forged in the first rush out of the ground.
