Topaz Lake, NV

Topaz Lake is a small Douglas County census-designated place on the northwest shore of the reservoir, right by the California line. U.S. 395 is the road spine, heading north toward Carson City and south toward Mono Lake, while the water gives this high-desert community its address. The lake was impounded in 1922 to store West Walker River water for irrigation, so its first purpose was practical rather than recreational. The Nevada and California shores share the reservoir, but the CDP sits on the Nevada side.

These days, Topaz's visible center is the lake itself. Topaz Marina and Douglas County Park provide boat launching, camping, picnic space, and the basic places people use when they come down to the water. Rainbow trout are the main draw for anglers, and the reservoir's changing water levels and wind are part of the local rhythm. There is no big downtown to compete with that geography: houses and businesses line the highway and shore, and the lake carries the community's name, recreation, and irrigation history all at once. Topaz Lake is a border-country place where a working water project and a fishing stop share the same few miles of road.
