Just a few minutes southeast of downtown sits Monroe Elementary, the historic school at the heart of Topeka's most famous chapter in civil rights history. In the early 1950s, local families teamed up with the NAACP to challenge segregated classrooms, leading directly to the landmark 1954 Supreme Court decision in Brown v. Board of Education. Today, the school is preserved as a National Historical Park. That deep sense of history stretches all the way back to Topeka's founding in 1854 by antislavery settlers during the Free-State movement. You feel that heritage strongest downtown around the Kansas State Capitol. Finished in 1903, the limestone building features massive historic murals and a soaring dome you can actually climb for sweeping panoramic views of the city. Downtown itself centers around the capitol grounds, giving the heart of town an open, historic atmosphere surrounded by state offices, local eateries, and community events.

Being the capital city provides Topeka with a steady, reliable economy. State government is naturally one of the biggest employers in the area, but the job market is rounded out by strong healthcare systems like Stormont Vail Health, major distribution hubs, and Washburn University. Washburn brings a great college-town energy to the south side of town, complete with community sports and continuing education programs. When it comes to downtime, Kansas Avenue serves as the central spine connecting the city's favorite gathering spots. Across the river to the north, the historic storefronts of the NOTO Arts and Entertainment District bustle with independent boutiques, craft breweries, and artist studios. The district really comes alive during monthly First Friday Artwalks and outdoor weekend concerts. Closer to the Washburn campus, you can check out exhibits at the Mulvane Art Museum or explore the surrounding parks and neighborhood cafes.
