About Tornado

Tornado is a Kanawha County census-designated place on the Coal River, and the name shares the map with Upper Falls. That is more than a naming footnote: Upper Falls is the physical landmark that gives the community its other identity. The lower Coal watershed begins below the falls, where development follows the river’s flatter ground and the hills rise sharply beyond it. Tornado sits within the Charleston-area orbit, but its geography is river-and-hills rather than city grid.

Coal has long been part of the local story, and the river has another life as a recreation corridor. Upper and Lower Falls drew swimmers and river users for much of the twentieth century, while the annual Tour de Coal, started in 2004, carries paddlers roughly 11 miles from Tornado to St. Albans. That mix gives the place a clear shape: a small community beside a named waterfall, with old coal and rail traces behind it and the river still providing a route out into Kanawha County.
