Torrey, UT

Torrey sits on the north bank of the Fremont River in Wayne County, between Boulder Mountain and Capitol Reef National Park. Latter-day Saint settlers established the town in the 1880s, first calling it Youngtown, and irrigation later made orchards and fields possible in the dry valley. State Route 24 passes through the center, carrying residents, visitors, and supplies along the Capitol Reef Country Scenic Byway. The town's shape is agricultural at its core, with red rock, cottonwoods, and high plateaus filling the distance.

Capitol Reef's designation as a national monument in 1937, followed by national-park status in 1971, changed Torrey's role. It remains a small Wayne County town with local farms, schools, services, and familiar neighbors, but it also supports lodging, restaurants, guides, galleries, and travelers heading into the park. The Fremont River keeps the settlement tied to water, while Boulder Mountain and the park set the horizon. Torrey works because two economies, valley agriculture and gateway travel, share the same few miles of road.
