Tortugas, NM

Tucked just south of Las Cruces and right next to New Mexico State University, Tortugas is a historic village with deep cultural roots. Settled by Piro, Manso, and Tiwa tribal members who moved up the Mesilla Valley over a century ago, the neighborhood has held onto its distinct identity even as the city has grown around it. Life here still centers on a tight-knit cluster of historic gathering spaces, including the Casa del Pueblo, a community chapel, and shared dining halls where neighbors come together for celebrations and tribal traditions. Tortugas Mountain, known locally as "A" Mountain, rises nearby and serves as an enduring landmark for the area.

The community is best known across southern New Mexico for its annual Fiesta of Our Lady of Guadalupe every December. During this three-day celebration, hundreds of pilgrims hike to the top of Tortugas Mountain, while the village streets fill with traditional Native and Matachines dancers, music, and shared meals. Even with Interstate 10 and university amenities right down the street, Tortugas maintains a quiet, small-village atmosphere rooted in living heritage and close community ties.
