Town Creek, AL

Town Creek is a Lawrence County town south of Wheeler Lake and the Tennessee River, at the U.S. Highway 72 and State Route 101 crossroads. It was first known as Jonesboro, after settler William Jones, and incorporated in 1875. The 2020 census counted 1,052 residents. Its position southeast of Muscle Shoals and northwest of Decatur places it in the north Alabama corridor between river industry, farm roads, and the larger Decatur region.

Water and history give Town Creek a strong local frame. State Route 101 leads north toward Wheeler Dam, while the Saunders-Goode-Hall House, built around 1824, stands just northeast of town as a documented historic property. The town's National Register sites and its place in the Decatur metropolitan area connect the small municipal grid to a wider regional story. Town Creek grew from a nineteenth-century settlement into a highway town beside the Tennessee River, with the old Jonesboro name, the lake, and the routes through town still helping a newcomer locate it.
